Paper Rex Opens Champions With 2-1 Win

Paper Rex opened VALORANT Champions Shanghai with a 2-1 victory over Team Liquid in Group C. The Pacific third seed won Ascent 13-4, dropped Haven 7-13, and recovered on Lotus for a 13-10 finish. The result sends Paper Rex to the winners’ match against G2 Esports, while EMEA second seed Liquid will face TYLOO in an elimination series. Neither outcome decides playoff qualification yet.

The veto produced a clean sequence of each team’s preferred ground followed by a familiar decider. Paper Rex removed Abyss and Summit, while Liquid took Sunset and Split out of the pool. PRX then selected Ascent and Liquid chose Haven, leaving Lotus for the third map. That order mattered because each team established a different tactical rhythm on its own pick before Lotus forced both approaches into the same series conclusion.

Paper Rex began Ascent with something on Yoru as its only Duelist and a Chamber-Sage double-Sentinel pairing for d4v41 and Jinggg. Liquid arrived with added attention on GSR, making his major-event debut after replacing purp0. PRX attacked effectively on a map often associated with defensive strength, built an 8-4 halftime lead, and never allowed Liquid to begin a second-half recovery. Something produced the first ace of the tournament, while d4v41’s 3-1 record in opening exchanges during the half helped turn the advantage into a 13-4 map.

Liquid’s Haven answer forced a decider

Liquid’s Haven composition moved in another direction. Harbor operated as the only Controller, GSR and kamo paired Yoru with Raze, and nAts played Killjoy. Paper Rex used Yoru and Phoenix with f0rsakeN on Astra. PRX won the opening pistol, its third pistol victory of the series at that point, but Liquid found value through prepared utility combinations and retake structure.

Liquid carried a 7-5 lead into halftime and then won its first pistol of the match after the side change. The advantage became a 13-7 map win that tied the series. Kamo led the server with 22 kills on Haven. More importantly for the series, Liquid showed that the one-sided Ascent did not define the matchup and that its unusual composition could still produce a controlled map against Paper Rex.

Lotus began with another strong PRX stretch. Paper Rex reached a 5-0 lead by stopping Liquid’s attack and preserving enough economy to keep pressure on the next gun rounds. Liquid disrupted that run with an eco victory and collected additional rounds when PRX lost coordination. An alecks timeout helped Paper Rex stabilize, and the Pacific side reached halftime ahead 9-3.

Liquid won the second-half pistol, but PRX denied the bonus conversion and later used consecutive C-site attacks to reach 12-8. Two technical pauses interrupted the flow without changing the central problem for Liquid: it needed four straight rounds merely to force overtime. GSR helped extend the defense, but d4v41 ended the threat with an ace for the 13-10 result.

Individual numbers matched the map story

Something finished the three maps with 58 kills and a 1.38 rating, leading the series in both categories cited by VLR. D4v41’s closing impact was concentrated on Lotus, where his 25 kills were the highest total on the map. Paper Rex therefore received one consistent series leader and a separate decisive performance at the moment the final map tightened.

Liquid’s strongest rating belonged to GSR at 1.06, while kamo accumulated 49 kills across the series. Those figures add context to the defeat without changing the bracket outcome. Liquid won its own map and produced resistance on Lotus, but PRX controlled enough of the opener and decider to secure the first Group C win.

The next matches now have different stakes. Paper Rex meets G2 with a route toward the playoffs available to the winner. Liquid plays TYLOO with the loser leaving the event. The opening result created those positions; it did not yet qualify Paper Rex or eliminate Team Liquid.

Paper Rex’s opening win combined a dominant Ascent with enough composure to close a tightening Lotus. Liquid’s Haven response kept the series competitive, but something’s overall production and d4v41’s decider finish moved PRX into the Group C winners’ match and left Liquid facing elimination.
