NRG opened VALORANT Champions Shanghai with a 2-0 victory over Nongshim RedForce in Group D on September 25. The defending world champions controlled their Lotus pick 13-5, then survived a more competitive Split 13-10 to finish the series without needing Sunset. Adam “mada” Pampuch led the server with 34 kills and a 1.39 rating, giving NRG a direct route into the group’s winners match.
The result reversed the direction of the teams’ earlier international meeting. Nongshim had beaten NRG 2-0 in the upper final at Masters Santiago, but the Shanghai rematch began with NRG dictating the pace on Lotus. An 8-4 attacking half gave the North American side room to manage the second half, and five defensive rounds ended the map before Nongshim could build a comeback.
NRG’s own pick also established the individual pattern of the series. mada produced 15 kills on Raze during Lotus, while brawk and keiko helped prevent Nongshim from finding a stable entry point. The 13-5 score was not the product of one isolated late run; NRG held the advantage across both halves.
Split was Nongshim’s selection and offered a different contest. The Pacific representative reached halftime within one round and continued to pressure NRG after the side switch. NRG nevertheless found nine attacking rounds across the map and closed 13-10. That margin shows why the sweep should not be described as two identical blowouts.
mada set the pace across both maps
mada finished the series with 34 kills against 23 deaths, a 1.39 rating and 236 average combat score. He played Raze on Lotus and Neon on Split, changing Agents without losing his role as NRG’s primary source of forward pressure. His plus-11 kill differential was the best on the server.
The supporting numbers mattered because Nongshim had chances to extend Split. skuba recorded 30 kills across the two maps, while brawk and keiko each finished with 32. NRG did not depend on one player winning every round; the roster kept enough pressure across several roles to deny the deciding map.
Nongshim’s best stretches came on Split, where Xross and Francis helped keep the score close. That response after Lotus prevents the 2-0 line from telling the entire story. The team improved on its own pick but did not convert enough defensive opportunities to take control before NRG reached match point.
Group D uses the GSL format, so the opening result changes each team’s path without ending either campaign. NRG advances to face Karmine Corp, which swept Xi Lai Gaming in the other opening series. A win there would qualify NRG for the playoffs with a 2-0 group record.
Nongshim drops into the elimination match against XLG. The loser of that series leaves Champions with two defeats, while the winner reaches the group decider. Nongshim therefore still controls its tournament survival even after beginning with a sweep.
The next opponents also create different preparation problems. Karmine Corp showed a fast, decisive attack in its opening win, whereas XLG must respond after winning only nine rounds across two maps. Neither matchup should be treated as settled by the opening-day score alone.
The sweep separates two Group D routes
NRG leaves its first match with both maps secured and no immediate elimination pressure. More importantly, it demonstrated two ways to win: early control on Lotus and a composed finish when Split remained close. That variety is useful in a group where every opponent arrived through a different regional route.
Nongshim now needs a reset rather than a complete reinvention. Its Split performance showed that the team could contest NRG over a longer map, but Lotus placed it too far behind too quickly. Cleaner opening halves would give the roster more freedom in an elimination series where there is no second chance.
One limitation remains important. Players separately reported technical concerns during the opening days, but the confirmed match record does not establish those concerns as the cause of this result. The competitive conclusion is limited to what happened on the server: NRG won Lotus and Split and earned the winners-match position.
