Team Vitality defeated Global Esports 2-1 in the opening Group B match at VALORANT Champions Shanghai on September 26. Vitality took Abyss 13-10, Global answered with a 13-9 victory on Ascent, and the EMEA roster closed the Summit decider 13-11. Elias “Jamppi” Olkkonen led Vitality with 60 kills across the three maps.
The series began on Vitality’s Abyss pick, where the European side reached halftime ahead 8-4. Global reduced the gap after switching sides and collected six attacking rounds, but Vitality found the five it needed to finish 13-10. The opening map gave Vitality the series lead without producing a runaway score.
Global responded on Ascent, its own selection. A 7-5 first half kept the map close before Global added six defensive rounds and limited Vitality to four. The 13-9 result was a clear correction: Global converted its veto advantage and forced a third map rather than allowing the opener to define the match.
Summit followed the same competitive pattern. Global held a narrow 6-5 lead during the first half, but Vitality’s seven rounds after the switch carried it to 13-11. Neither side built enough distance to relax, and the final margin reflected a series in which both teams won meaningful stretches.

Jamppi changed roles without losing impact
Jamppi played Yoru on Abyss, Sage on Ascent and Phoenix on Summit. Across those three roles he produced 60 kills, 48 deaths, a 1.15 rating and 244 ACS. The Agent changes altered his utility responsibilities, yet he remained Vitality’s leading source of kills.
His best statistical map was Abyss, where he posted 32 kills and a 1.25 rating. He added 28 more kills across Ascent and Summit, including enough late impact to help Vitality recover the deciding map after trailing at halftime. The series total was built across three different tactical assignments rather than one repeated composition.
Global’s UdoTan supplied 53 kills, while Kr1stal finished with 44. Their output kept the match competitive through all three maps. Global’s Ascent win and 11 rounds on Summit show why the 2-1 result should be described as a close victory, not a one-sided opening.
Vitality advances to the Group B winners match. A victory there would secure a playoff place, while a defeat would send the team to the group decider. Global enters the elimination match and must win to preserve its tournament run.
At the time this article was prepared, the second Group B opening series between LOUD and EDward Gaming had not been fully confirmed as complete by the selected sources. The responsible bracket description therefore leaves both next opponents unnamed. Their identities depend on the final result of that match.
That distinction is important in live tournament coverage. Vitality’s and Global’s positions are confirmed by their completed series, but projecting an opponent before the other opener ends could place a team on the wrong side of the bracket.
A narrow decider shapes both campaigns
Vitality can take confidence from winning two maps that required closing under pressure. It protected its first-half lead on Abyss and overturned a small deficit on Summit. Those situations demanded different responses and produced a useful test before the winners match.
Global demonstrated that it could recover after losing its opponent’s pick. Its Ascent defense tied the series, and Summit remained within two rounds. The elimination path is unforgiving, but the performance offers concrete areas to preserve rather than forcing an assumption that the entire approach failed.
For both teams, the next series will be more consequential. Vitality plays for direct qualification; Global plays to avoid elimination. Their opening match did not settle Group B, but it gave Vitality the shorter route and reduced Global’s remaining margin for error to one series.

Vitality survived a genuine three-map test, winning Abyss 13-10 and Summit 13-11 around Global’s 13-9 Ascent response. Jamppi’s 60 kills across Yoru, Sage and Phoenix anchored the victory. Vitality moves to the winners match, while Global must recover in the elimination match.
